However, our clients were ready to refresh the look and make the house more livable for their family of five. We focused on each room/space individually, as well as the overall background materials of the interior and exterior, to bring the home to a new level of design. Included in our design scope was a new entry staircase design, beautiful updated light fixtures throughout the house, stunning custom artwork, a redesigned fireplace wall, new wood flooring and updated furnishings. His office also received additional millwork and storage, a walk-up bar and a feature crocodile textured wall. The formal dining room was repurposed to serve as Her office, with finishes such as off-white lacquer, brushed gold and a soft blush pink wallpaper. Upstairs, a previously neglected gathering area near the secondary bedrooms became a walk-up coffee/juice bar. However, our clients were ready to refresh the look and make the house more livable for their family of five. We focused on each room/space individually, as well as the overall background materials of the interior and exterior, to bring the home to a new level of design. Included in our design scope was a new entry staircase design, beautiful updated light fixtures throughout the house, stunning custom artwork, a redesigned fireplace wall, new wood flooring and updated furnishings. His office also received additional millwork and storage, a walk-up bar and a feature crocodile textured wall. The formal dining room was repurposed to serve as Her office, with finishes such as off-white lacquer, brushed gold and a soft blush pink wallpaper. Although it wasn’t the exposure we had prepared for, we enjoyed the opportunity to create a stunning powder room, and a kitchen/morning room, both emphasizing Black as an accent color. The appliances with Rose Gold metal accents allowed us to stretch our design sensibilities and include this very special metal on the custom kitchen range hood. Luxury that Lives Well! Our clients were repeat clients, this being the third project we’ve done together. A lot of personal preferences and lifestyle decisions went into making this home perfect for them. The house is on a steep hillside, with floor to ceiling windows on front and back; it embraces long distance views from the front and very close-up, desert hillside views from the back. The experience of being in the great room (conversation area, dining and kitchen) is a feeling of openness and freedom, a combination of intimacy and expansion. With that in mind, we selected a warm stained wood ceiling, which brings in warmth and human scale, even though the ceilings are very high. We also selected a porcelain tile floor material very early on, that was neutral enough to create a soft background, but had enough color and visual texture to tie the patios to the indoor spaces and minimalize the appearance of dust, a constant companion in the desert! This home, which is on the side of a mountain in Phoenix, allows a seamless experience in indoor-outdoor living…an important aspect of life in the Valley of the Sun. Before this extensive remodel, there were old fashioned “sliding glass doors”, which allowed passage but didn’t encourage the use of the entire home and patio as one experience. The homeowners appreciate the lifestyle afforded by the meaningful layout of furnishings through careful placement of seating, conversing and dining areas that marry the experience from one area to another. Another important aspect of this remodel is the addition of a “floating” wood ceiling. The great room ceiling was inordinately tall and architecturally bland, which made the human experience in the room empty and disconnected. The warm wood and indirect lighting around it adds a feeling of cohesiveness to a room that is quite large and meant to serve a variety of purposes. Having executed many design projects during that point in design time, we are refreshed by the new approach to Southwestern design, which features contemporary architecture blending seamlessly with the surrounding Sonoran Desert. Floor to ceiling and pocketing glass walls offer uninterrupted views, and elements of “Southwestern” decor are found in artwork and accessories. Our inspiration for this project came from the amazing architecture by PHX Architecture (Scottsdale, AZ), which rests in a linear fashion along a gentle ridge that offers views for 50 miles in almost every direction. With an architectural backdrop like this, the interior design and furnishings need to support the structure and the views it provides, rather than providing any competition that might detract from the whole of the design.
